I’ve taken all the feedback and experience from running a really well reviewed illustration course for the past 2 years and poured it into this brand new course, which will cover completely new subjects not covered in the original illustration course.

The course is spread over 8 modules, but each modules will be split into 2.

The first half will be focusing on honing your core drawing skills, making you more confident in your sketching whilst the second half of the module will be focusing on ways to elevate your illustrations, hone your own style and find your own voice as an artist.

Course Structure:

Module 1:
Shape and Guidelines / Diversity

We'll start the course by going over useful guidelines you can whilst drawing to help you with proportions, anatomy, drawing hands and drawing facial features as well as honing your eye to look at shapes in the body or clothes and capture them quickly.

Then we'll explore how diversity in your illustrations can not only stop the dreaded 'same face' syndrome but also how a portfolio with various ethnicities, body types and more will elevate your work and job opportunities.

Module 2:
Loosen Up / Exploring Colour

Week 2 we'll focus on loosening up your work, it's the no.1 complaint I hear from illustrators is that they feel their work is too stiff, so through a series of exercises we'll loosen up your approach to illustrating and embrace the gestural.

Then we'll explore how the use of colour can elevate an illustration, either through colour schemes, elimination of certain colours or by adding contrast to your work.

Module 3:
Using References / The Power Of Poses

Week 3 will cover how to use references, we'll break you out of the routine of replicating an entire image through various exercises that will get you combining your imagination with references and having much more control over what you're wanting to draw.

Then we will explore posing, how the power of posing is very underutilised in many fashion illustrations. Posing can be used to depict emotions, showcase the clothes, create a mood, show off compositions, we'll explore all the different uses and you can pick which elements you want to include.

Module 4:
Sketchbooks / Artistic Process

Week 4 we'll focus on my favourite thing, sketchbooks! The sketchbook tours you see on Instagram have warped people's view, they are not a book full of finished pieces. I'm always surprised at how few illustrators actually use sketchbooks, so it's time to embrace the crappy sketches, the unfinished scribbles and the bad ideas through a series of exercises and homework briefs.

I will share a complete thorough break down of my illustration process, to show you how many steps a drawing can take and all the methods I use to make the process as fun and enjoyable as possible.

Module 5:
Backgrounds / Narrative & Concepts

In week 5 we’ll cover backgrounds! It’s something a lot of us fashion illustrators steer clear of but it’s so beneficial to be able to do them, especially for editorial work. So we’ll cover how to draw backgrounds, how much detail to add, composition for backgrounds and how to adapt them to your own drawing style.

Then we’ll explore how to add narrative to a fashion illustration and how to create a concept for an illustration. Which will not only help you get more editorial work but also create work that is more personal to you and your own experiences.

Module 6:
Experiment / Adding Something New

In week 6 we’ll focus on experimenting, with materials , mediums and styles. This will help you find what direction you want to go and help give you a stronger sense of what your existing style is.

Then we’ll concentrate on adding something new, most fashion illustrations I see are either replicas of a reference photo or just drawing what is in front of you. This module we’ll push you to always add something new to a drawing so it sets your illustration not only apart from the reference photo but also apart from your peers.

Module 7:
Drawing From Your Imagination / Inspiration

In week 7 we’re focusing on imagination! This is an ongoing process but through a series of drawing exercises we will get you more comfortable visualising things to draw, which will mean you’re not always reliant on copying references and will make you more confident with your illustrating.

Then we’ll explore getting inspired by anything, how to look at normal things differently and hone your creative eye so you can not only be a more creative person but also find inspiration in places others wouldn’t.

Module 8:
Quantity / Presenting Your Work

In the final week, we’re focusing on quantity! It’s a myth that to improve you need to go from perfected drawing to perfected drawing, it’s all about doing numbers and making mistakes when you’re wanting improve. So through a series of drawing exercises we’ll be focusing on churning out quicker paced sketches which will fast track your improvement whilst also making you more comfortable tackling a blank page without overthinking.

Then we’ll run through improving how you present your work, so you can take all the work you’ve created over the course and share it on your website or instagram to a more professional standard. We’ll go through taking better photos, step by steps of scanning, editing tutorials and quick tips on how to make any drawing look more impressive.
